Artist Statement 2

2019.02-2019.05

In the research of traditional patterns, I believe that the traditional function should break through itself. On the basis of drawing on the value and characteristics of traditional patterns, we should give full play to the characteristics of the artists themselves. Mention contemporary art works that incorporate traditional style, the audience first distinguishes between traditional and contemporary styles, and then finds the fusion of the two styles. Because in the visual effects of most of these art works in contemporary society: traditional elements are usually larger than what the work wants to express. In other words, it is easier for people to see the effects of traditional elements and ignore the artist's ideas. So how to successfully and correctly learn from traditional patterns, so that the value of the art works itself is higher than the role played by traditional patterns and even maximizing hide the traditional elements of work? It is the stage of my current research. For example, my research direction from combines traditional symmetrical patterns with contemporary graffiti, exploring more possibilities from some specific forms extending to how traditional patterns form play a role in contemporary art, exploring more possibilities from some specific functions.

To explore the traditional form of function and to maximize the hiding of the traditional form means to perfection and natural integration. Although the work draws on tradition, it does not let the audience feel in the first place, but maximizes the artist's own characteristics. To achieve a perfect blend of this two need to understand the characteristics behind them: In the process of researching traditional patterns, I explored two aspects of Chinese traditional symmetrical architecture and Chinese Buddhist murals from the historical background, the causes and religious characteristics. At the same time, the investigation also clarified my own ideas and confirmed my feelings. For example: What aspects of traditional patterns appeal to me?

In the next work, I will extend this research direction. Ask some questions, such as: Can traditional patterns form be integrated into all contemporary art forms? Not even limited to art works, is it feasible to interact with art work in the exhibition space? Discover the value of traditional patterns to contemporary art and promoting the future development of art and the public's understanding of contemporary art.
